Head the canes back to about 5 feet tall. Thin the canes and leave the most vigorous ones spaced to leave about six canes per plant. Fruit is born on the tips of blackberry branches. Fruit should be observed regularly for infestation before and during harvest. A one-wire or two-wire system can be used. Pruning starts at the ground, not at the top of the bush. Each shoot may have several of these growth flushes during the season, and each may grow 6 inches to 10 inches long. The spittlebug is a vector for Pierce’s disease in both muscadine and bunch grapes. Table 14–1 summarizes the characteristics of small fruits commonly grown in North Carolina gardens. Hand pull the occasional weeds that do grow. They are another good source of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins such as vitamin A. Guava. Highbush cultivars often do not grow well in the North Carolina piedmont and North Carolina coastal plain because highbush blueberries are not adapted to those soils.
